If your toilet or drains aren't functioning properly, there are a few steps you can take to try to resolve matters.
A standard household plunger will dislodge many minor clogs in toilets and drain pipes. If you're using it on your toilet, flush once and then press the plunger over the drainage opening.
Pump up and down to try to move the blockage through. If you're successful, the toilet should flush on its own when you lift the plunger.
The same technique also works in a blocked sink or bathtub.
Be careful not to use chemicals in your pipes that could damage the plumbing system.
Power outages may occur across the electrical grid, impacting multiple homes in the area; some outages are also localized, meaning you're the only home impacted.
If a neighborhood outage occurs, contact your utility company for information. Common causes include bad weather or felled power lines.
Did you trip your circuit breaker?
If you overload your home's electrical circuit, you may trip the breaker. Locate yours and confirm that it's in the ON position.
If you do trip the circuit, identify what caused the overload, to avoid potentially hazardous situations in the future.
If you run out of hot water too quickly or have no hot water at all, check the settings on your water heater. Some tanks have vacation modes, which limit the amount of water heated at any given time.
If you can reset the system, wait 15 to 20 minutes before testing the water temperature again.
If you don't have heat or air conditioning in your rental property, check the thermostat settings. It's quite easy to accidentally modify these settings.
